This article proposes that all psychologists-and all psychologies-are innately concerned with justice, and yet there is no consensually defined discipline of psychology, and no consensual understanding of social justice. Adopting an intergroup and identitybased model of what is and what should be, we will describe the mechanisms whereby identities and perceptions of justice are formed, contested, and changed over time. We will argue that psychological research and practice have implications for social justice even where-and perhaps especially when-these are not made (...) explicit. Psychology is considered as the product of diverse groups with distinct and evolving identities, and with differential access to resources and power, which dynamically contest different normative perceptions of justice. McMaster's budget cuts could mean that we cannot hire summer students for our research. This loss would be difficult but bearable. Next year some of the grants will run out. Then we will be even more dependent on a university, like others in Ontario, which is retrenching through a hiring 96 Russell summer 1990 freeze and other mortifications. Fortunately our May 1989 grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada remain unchanged. But the Russell Project has demonstrated that it is a hardy survivor. In the past we have endured cuts from S.S.H.R.C.C. and cutbacks from the university. But we have persevered and certainly accelerated our output significantly as our understanding of this massive enterprise has continued to develop. This coherent collection of original papers marks the 150 year anniversary since the publication of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species (1859). Although the area of evolution-related publications is vast, the area of interaction between Darwinian ideas and specifically Catholic doctrine has received limited attention. This interaction is quite distinct from the one between Darwinism and the Christian tradition in general. Interest in Darwin from the Catholic viewpoint has recently been rekindled. Le cahier de notes de Schelling sur ses lectures de l'année 1809 peut être confronté avec l'agenda de Schelling de la même année. Il s'avère que des nombreuses lectures sur le problème du mal précèdent et suivent immédiatement la publication des Recherches sur la liberté humaine. La lecture de Jacob Böhme y est attestée; mais il s'agit d'une présentation populaire de la doctrine de Böhme. En fait, l'ouvrage annoté par Schelling est un gros opuscule intitulé Hirtenbrief an die wahren (...) und ächten Freymäurer alten Systems, anonyme paru en 1785, dont le contenu est une « mise en système » de la doctrine de Böhme, c'est-à-dire une rationalisation stricte de cette philosophie. Schelling, lisant cet opuscule en a supprimé tout élément proprement théosophique pour ne garder que le côté spéculatif, sans référence précise à la révélation chrétienne. Il n'y a encore aucune christologie chez Schelling, alors même qu'est présent le schème de la connexion de la liberté et du mal. Le mal est un moment nécessaire de la création car, sans lui, Dieu ne pourrait se manifester. Le mal est colère de Dieu, souffrance et maladie; il n'est pas voulu par l'homme, mais il est le révélateur de la triste mélancolie de l'existence créée. The Notebook of Schelling concerning his readings in the year 1809 is to be compared with the diary of Schelling in the same year. A number of readings about the problem of evil precedes and succeeds the publication of Untersuchungen über das Wesen der menschlichen Freiheit (1809). The reading of Jacob Böhme is attested in this Notebook; but it is a popular presentation of the boehmist doctrine. It is a fact that Schelling annotated a big opuscule called Hirtenbrief an die wahren und ächten Freymäurer alten Systems, anonymously published in 1785; the contents of this book is a systematisation of the boehmist doctrine, a strict rationalisation of this philosophy. Schelling, studying this opuscule, has suppressed any elements specifically theosophic, and has retained only the speculative elements without any references to the Christian Revelation. There is not yet any christology in Schellingian thinking, even if the scheme of the connexion of liberty and evil is present. Evil is a necessary moment in the Creation, because without it God cannot reveal himself. The evil is the anger of God, suffering and illness; it does not proceed from the man, but it reveals the unhappy melancoly of the created existence. (shrink)

Über eine Darstellung der Geschichte der Philosophie von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart werden die Probleme der Philosophie weiter vertieft und die Antworten auf diese Probleme diskutiert. Im dritten Teil des Buches gibt der Autor dann eine ausführliche Anleitung (...) zur philosophischen Arbeit, wie sie heute kaum noch zu finden ist und Studierenden der Philosophie aber auch anderen philosophisch Interessierten eine große Hilfestellung geben kann. Zu diesem Teil gehören eine Einführung in das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten und ein Überblick über die wichtigsten philosophischen Schriften der Vergangenheit. Der bekannte Logiker und Philosoph Joseph M. Bochenski O.P. sagte zu diesem Buch: „Ich wage dieses Buch als eine dialektische Höchstleistung der Philosophie unserer Zeit zu kennzeichnen. Ich möchte es in den Händen aller Studenten der Philosophie, aller philosophierenden Nicht-Philosophen und auch mancher Philosophen selbst sehen.“. (shrink)

Nach den Teilen I (1973), II (1979), III (1988) und IV (1994) liegt hiermit der vorletzte Band des wohl umfangreichsten Übersetzungs- und Kommentieriungswerkes vor, das jemals einem byzantinischen Geschichtsschreiber gewidmet wurde. Leider war es aber dem unermüdlichen Bearbeiter nicht beschieden, sein großes Unternehmen noch mit dem sechsten Teil abzuschließen. Van Dieten ist am 26. 12. 2003 kurz vor seinem 80. Geburtstag gestorben.

Drawing partly on unpublished materials from the Sozialwissenschaftliche Archiv Konstanz (Alfred‑Schütz‑Gedächtnis‑Archiv), in this paper I attempt to reconstruct Schutz’s barely explored reception of Marx and Marxism. To this aim, I proceed in four steps. First (1), I trace the very few references to Marxian thought in Schutz’s published work. Second (2), I review Schutz’s mentions of the topic in his correspondences with his friends and colleagues Aron Gurwitsch and Eric Voegelin. Third (3), I give an overview of the books by (...) Marx and other Marxist literature that Schutz had in his personal library. Finally (4), I analyze Schutz’s unpublished lectures on “Dialectics” and “Problems of a Sociology of Knowledge,” two of the only documents where he extensively discusses Marx and Marxism. The reconstruction carried out in the paper is not an end in itself but an effort to contribute to the contemporary ‘critical turn’ in phenomenology. (shrink)

The moral right to privacy consists of the power to determine who may gain access to information about oneself. Individual human beings need some measure of privacy in order to develop a sense of self and to avoid manipulation by the state. Journalists who respect the privacy rights of those on whom they report should especially be careful not to intrude unduly when gathering information, in publishing they should be able to demonstrate a public need to know private information. The world is out of joint, so much so that disobeying should be an urgent question for everyone. In this provocative essay, Frédéric Gros explores the roots of political obedience. Social conformity, economic subjection, respect for authorities, constitutional consensus? Examining the various styles of obedience provides tools to study, invent and induce new forms of civic disobedience and lyrical protest. Nothing can be taken for granted: neither supposed certainties nor social conventions, economic injustice or moral conviction. Thinking philosophically requires (...) us never to accept truths and generalities that seem obvious. It restores a sense of political responsibility. At a time when the decisions of experts are presented as the result of icy statistics and anonymous calculations, disobeying becomes an assertion of humanity. To philosophize is to disobey. New coverage of the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the ensuing public education campaigns by the Department of Veterans Affairs and private veterans advocacy groups combine to call the public's attention to the many potential mental health problems associated with traumatic event exposure. Indeed, since 2001, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom combat and peacekeeping missions have been characterized by high levels of exposure to acts of extreme violence, with often gruesome effects. Less publically discussed is the (...) fact that a surprisingly large number of United States civilians also report exposure to traumatic events, such as severe interpersonal violence, natural disasters, and serious automobile accidents. In fact, approximately 70% of randomly sampled respondents indicated that they have experienced an incident characterized by significant perceived life threat at some point during their lives. In the present paper, I analyze the complex relationship of tension between Critical Theory and phenomenology from a sociological-theoretical perspective. I start from two theses. The first one is that one of the primary reasons for the antagonism between these two paradigms lies in their ideal-typically opposed assessments of the role of ‘meaning-adequacy’ in social research. The second one is that in recent years, there has been a strong rapprochement of Critical Theory with (social) phenomenology. This shift, fundamentally embodied in (...) Hartmut Rosa’s work, can be understood as the culminating point of a progressive turn towards meaning-adequacy within the Frankfurt School. In order to unfold these two theses, I will proceed in three steps. First (1), I will present the main outlines of the relationship of tension between the two traditions from both a historico-intellectual and a systematic perspective. Second (2), I will focus on the contemporary readings of the Schutzian notion of ‘meaning-adequacy’ and discuss their value for better understanding the historical opposition between the two paradigms, as well as their recent rapprochement. Third (3), I will sketch the key features of Rosa’s sociology of world-relations, understood as a phenomenological Critical Theory that shows a strong commitment to a radicalized version of the meaning-adequacy postulate. Resumen En este artículo me propongo revisitar de manera sucinta y sistemática los li-neamientos centrales de la teoría de la subjetividad de Sigmund Freud, persiguiendo el objetivo de mostrar la vigencia filosófica y teórico-social de la misma. Para ello, procedo en tres pasos: en primer lugar expongo el modo en que el autor construye su concepción del "sujeto del Inconsciente" a través de un enfrentamiento con la noción de "sujeto cartesiano". Luego, examino la tensión entre natura y nurtura que puede (...) rastrearse en su tratamiento del problema de la "pulsión" [ Trieb]. Y, finalmente, reseño su descripción de la estructura tripartita del aparato psíquico, poniendo especial énfasis en su noción de la subjetividad escindida y en el análisis del origen intersubjetivo del "Superyó" [Über-Ich].In this paper, I intend to systematically revisit the main lines of Sigmund Freud's theory of subjectivity, with the aim of showing its current relevance within the fields of philosophy and social theory. In order to do so, I will proceed in three steps. First, I will scrutinize the way Freud elaborates his account of the "subject of unconsciousness" arguing against the conception of the "Cartesian subject". Then, I will examine the tension between nature and nurture, which can be found in his treatment of the problem of "drives" [Triebe]. Finally, I will sketch out his description of the three-fold structure of the psychical apparatus, putting special emphasis on his conception of the "split subjectivity" and on his analysis of the intersubjective origin of the Superego [Über-Ich]. There is a broad consensus that the study of social institutions is one of the fundamental concerns of the social sciences. The idea that phenomenology has ignored this topic is also widely accepted. As against this view, the present paper aims at demonstrating that especially Schutzian phenomenology—that is, the social-phenomenological tradition started by Alfred Schutz and continued by Thomas Luckmann and Peter Berger, among others—provides rich insights on the nature and workings of social institutions that could contribute to enriching the (...) current social-scientific debate on the issue. In order to show this, the authors attempt to unearth and systematically reconstruct Schutz’s and Berger and Luckmann’s insights on social institutions and to confront them with current approaches.
